Another Math whiz kid of Regional Science High School (RSHS) will advance to the next qualifying stage of the 14th Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO) on November 26 after making it to the top 50 slot in the Luzon Area qualifying round.
Mitzi Love C. Syjongtian, the Math whiz kid, followed the fate of Kevin Wai Yin S. Lam who hurdled the same exam in 2010 but failed to make in the top 20 examinees nationwide.
Determined to end the medal drought in PMO, Romel L. Ricardo, Math Department Head, is hopeful that this year, a Regscihyer will make it to the top 20 examinees in the second qualifying stage considering the caliber of Syjongtian.
Asked how they prepared to secure a spot in the PMO, Ricardo told he conducted series of reviews and gave Syjongtian Math reviewers to refresh herself on topics in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus.
“Qualifying in the PMO is like passing through the proverbial eye of a needle. So there’s no need for us to be idle nor to lax,” said Ricardo.
The PMO is run by the Mathematical Society of the Philippines through the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) and Department of Education (DepEd) with support of private and business sectors.
